Telescopic crane to install off-shore wind turbines

Clean Energy

JB Systems was commissioned by GustoMSC, a renowned design and engineering company for mobile offshore units and equipment, to design and build the control system for the largest telescopic offshore crane in the world. This is JB Systems’ second major innovative project for GustoMSC.

Sales manager Kees van der Meijden sees this follow-up order as a confirmation of the mutual trust between GustoMSC and JB Systems, which was laid during the realisation of the automation of the Chela; an innovative crane design for drilling rigs.

Designed for next-generation wind farms

The innovative telescopic crane, for which JB Systems will supply the control software, is especially designed for the installation of next-generation wind farms. The crane designed by GustoMSC combines two extreme requirements: being able to work at a height of 160 metres above the ship’s deck to, for instance, install the nacelle and the rotor blades, and a lifting capacity of more than 2500 T for installing the foundations.

Custom software

‘We develop custom software for most of the projects we carry out at JB Systems, as we did for this crane. However, with a view to follow-up orders for this type of crane, we have set up the software in such a way that we can reuse it, whereby differences in execution, which are often client-specific, can easily be adjusted.’

Thanks to this method of software development and our simulations, we are able to easily integrate changes made during the project with a minimum of cost and turnaround time. In addition to the software engineering, we also realised the electrical design for the control of the crane. This engineering is the basis for building the cabinets and installing the crane. All our work has been tested by a Japanese certification institute class NK. In preparation for the final FAT, a so-called extended FAT is carried out. During this test, a number of physical components such as control cabinets, motors and winches are assembled and connected for even better testing.
